Gluten Free at McDonald's

Edited on August 17,2012. I received a comment which I have chosen to publish. One reader stated that they believe that McDonalds french fries contain gluten.
I checked McDonald's canadian website today for the updated list of ingredients and have pasted the list here:

French Fries
Salt
French Fries: Potatoes, canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, safflower oil, natural flavour (vegetable source),
dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain colour), citric acid (preservative), dimethylpolysiloxane (antifoaming agent) and cooked in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with THBQ, citric acid and dimethylpolysiloxane).

Hey readers....from the above listing which ingredient do you think contains gluten?
Please reply in the comment section. I would appreciate input from readers. thx.

Original Post :

I sent in a request to McDonald's in order to find out which of their foods are gluten free and this is the list that they sent to me. They also wanted to remind me that they don't manage their restaurants in a way that ensures that the foods with gluten have not touched the gluten free items, therefore their list included only the items that don't have gluten listed as one of their initial ingredients.
Disclaimer-NOTE: Neither this blog nor I take any liability for this list. I would encourage anyone with  questions to contact McDonald's head office themselves for further details.

Available Gluten Free Food

Dealing with gluten intolerance in the family can be inconvenient so it's great when good items become available at regular stores, not specialty shops.

I've noticed that Giant Tiger, which is a Canadian chain store available across Canada,
carries Gluten Free boxed Icecream by Chapmans.
to Find the nearest Giant Tiger store try their store locator:

Also the local Sobeys carries a good selection of "Bob's Red Mill" products of which many are gluten free. Some are gluten free flours and baking mixes and some are gluten free grains and baking additives.
For more info about Bob's Red Mill products check out their site

We are now in 20 countries and counting...... Welcome Austria! OK, I promise I am not being financially compensated for praising this  product :)
If you or someone you care about is sensitive to Wheat or Gluten, check out these:

They are made in Ireland.
Here's their address and website:
Sunstart Bakery

On the box it states that it is Gluten Free and Suitable for Vegetarians.

Gluten and Lactose Free Foods

One of our family members is sensitive to gluten and lactose. So it has become a bit of a hobby to find foods that are gluten and lactose free that taste great too. Well, I've found two lately.
One is called "Larabar" -- the cashew one. It's wrapped like a small canday bar and is a good energy boost. I bought it at Zehrs on sale for $1.99. The  taste is great . perfect for a snack on the go.

The other find was a cheese substitute made from soy called " Earth Island-- Vegan Gourment-- Soya Mozzarella Flavour. I am told it also melts well. So far so good, taste is pretty good considering it is a soy product and has that moist "tofu-ish" feel to it. The saleslady in the store said that it freezes ok too.
It's a little pricey , but I bought it for 5.99 for 284 grams at Zehrs in the health food section.

Anyone have any gluten free or lactose free recommendations ?
PS.Jan 24, 2011. a new gluten free favourite is polenta. It sold ( one kg package ) on sale at Food Basics for 2 dollars and change. It's made by Aurora and is ready to serve/fry. It's very versatile. Technically it is not a certified gluten free food, but since it only has the following 5 ingredients, it's cool in my book: water, corn meal, salt, tartaric acid, sorbic acid. Bon Appetit!
